Some Common Pests & Diseases
Emerald Ash Borer
The emerald ash borer is a destructive, metallic-green beetle that attacks and kills ash trees. Originally from Asia, it has spread across North America, killing millions of trees since its arrival.
EAB larvae tunnel beneath the bark, disrupting the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients—causing canopy dieback and eventual death, usually within 2–4 years of infestation.
Common signs include:
-
Thinning or dead branches at the top of the tree
-
D-shaped exit holes in the bark
-
Bark splitting and woodpecker damage
-
Increased leaf loss and overall decline
Without treatment, infected trees almost always die. Preventive insecticide treatments are highly effective when started early.

Pine Bark Beetle
Pine bark beetles are tiny insects that burrow under the bark of pine trees, cutting off the tree’s ability to move water and nutrients. They typically target stressed or weakened trees, but large infestations can kill even healthy ones.
Signs include:
-
Reddish or yellowing needles
-
Small holes in the bark
-
Sap oozing from the trunk (pitch tubes)
-
Fine sawdust around the base
Left untreated, they can quickly spread and kill multiple trees. Early detection and preventive treatments are key.

To treat pine bark beetles we recommend pheromone packets. Follow the link of more information and to purchase:

Fire Blight
Fire blight is a plant disease that mainly affects apple, pear, and other related trees. It’s caused by a harmful bacterium called Erwinia amylovora.
Simple Signs of Fire Blight:
-
Flowers and shoots turn brown or black, looking burned.
-
Young branches bend into a shepherd’s crook shape.
-
Sticky liquid may ooze from infected areas.
-
Fruit can turn dark and shriveled but stay on the tree.
-
In severe cases, whole branches or the tree can die back.
How It Spreads:
-
Through rain, insects, wind, or dirty pruning tools.
-
It spreads fastest in warm, wet weather, especially in spring.
Fire blight spreads quickly and can do a lot of damage, so early action is important.
